Two bays is what most of this catalogue is drawn around, because it is what most lots and most buyers assume. The decision that actually matters on a two-car plan is not the size -- it is whether the door is one wide opening or two separate ones, and where the garage meets the house.

A single twenty-two foot door looks cleaner on the elevation and is easier to back a wide vehicle through. Two nine-foot doors with a pier between them break up the facade and cost less to replace one at a time. Both are drawn in this catalogue and the elevations show which you are getting before you buy.

The connection into the house is the part people regret. A garage that opens into a mudroom with somewhere to drop coats and shopping is worth more day to day than two extra feet of width; one that opens straight into a kitchen or a hallway turns every wet day into a mess. The floor plans here show that door and what is behind it, so you can check it rather than assume it.

Twenty by twenty is the minimum that parks two cars. Twenty-four by twenty-four is the size people are glad of later, because it leaves room to open both doors and walk between the cars. The garage is dimensioned on the drawings and excluded from the heated square footage.

Every plan includes dimensioned floor plans, four elevations, a roof plan, an electrical layout and a materials list. Plans run $99 to $199, one time.

Common Questions

FAQ

One wide door or two single doors?

A single twenty-two foot door suits a wide truck and gives a cleaner elevation; two nine-foot doors are cheaper to replace individually and break up the front of the house. The elevations on each plan show which that design uses, so it is visible before you buy rather than a surprise at framing.

How wide does a two-car garage need to be?

Twenty feet parks two cars. Twenty-four is the width people wish they had built -- it is the difference between turning sideways between the wing mirrors and walking through comfortably with shopping in both hands. The dimension is on the floor plan of every plan here.

Does the garage open into a mudroom?

On most of these plans, yes, and it is worth checking on the floor plan which ones. A garage door into a mudroom with hooks and a bench is the detail that makes a house work in winter; a garage door straight into the kitchen is the one owners change first.

Can I get these plans with a basement?

Slab is standard, and the drawings can be ordered on a crawlspace for $29 or a full basement for $49 -- the basement option is not a note on the foundation plan, it adds a dimensioned basement floor plan and a basement electrical plan to the set.
